Time to update the dictionary

It's happening now. You know how people say they learn a new word or sign every day. Some days it seems like 2 or 3 words or signs. R's dictionary has grown and we're struggling to keep up. Here are the signs and words she's been saying in the last few days:

girl - sign
boy -sign
cereal - sign
thank you - sign

cheek
neck
elbow
knee
toes

hippo
squeak

color
black
blue
pink
purple
orange
yellow
(strangely, we've been having trouble with red and green)

we've been preparing for seeing family during the holidays with:
aunt
uncle

lots of others that I can't think of. We'll have to get more on video, but of course it's hard to get R to repeat what you want when you want it. Especially for company or cameras.

  1. the easiest way to teach green and red is red means stop and green means go. You can use stop lights and say "tell me when it turn green, and then when it does say" green means go" etc.

  2. My brother has trouble with red and green as a kind of color blindness. Do you think that could be it? I would think if she can tell the difference between blue and purple that is not it.

  3. That's a good idea, Anon, about the red/green stop/go thing. We could even try playing at home with red and green cards. Kind of like "Safety Town".

ConceptALT, I doubt she's color blind but we will definitely keep our eyes open for it. The trouble is more that she doesn't actually say the words. She tries to say blue, brown, black, etc. but not red or green yet. I've actually been wondering if it could be more related to the "r" and "g" sounds which she doesn't really say at the beginning of words yet. Like she doesn't say "grandma" or "grammie" or any of those words yet either, even though we've been working *very* hard on them!

  4. yes, the g and r are later sounds to make. I'm sure she just needs more time to get the colors. She is still young for that. when G was here for Thanksgiving we worked on Red and green in the car on the way to Grandma H's and everytime we stopped at a light we said tell daddy when to go and when it would turn we made a big deal about it. When stopping we told him the light was red so daddy had to stop.Gr. K.
