R is for the most part completely potty trained. She does, however, still have the very rare accident. She had one today. I was asking her afterwards what happened and she said, "My pee pee was knocking on my bottom."
"It was knocking on your bottom?"
"Yes, and I let it flow."
"Well, next time your pee pee comes knocking, run to the potty and don't let it out until you get there!"

Two Steps Forward, One Step Backwards
Well, things with potty training are churning along. We hit a roadblock last weekend, when she had, over the course of the weekend, something like six poop accidents. She was peeing okay but pooping in her pants repeatedly, often just after going to her room for nap time.
We were pretty frustrated about it but I just kept reminding myself of what my mother-in-law told me a few times: you can choose to let it bother you and get stressed out or you can just let it go. R will get potty trained eventually either way.
So I've been trying to let it go. Mostly. It helps a lot to have J to bounce back and forth on. Whichever one of us would get aggravated about having to swish another poopy pair of underpants in the toilet would get relieved by the other.
I'm embarrassed to admit that usually it was J rescuing me. But I did try very hard to always be calm and never make her feel bad about having an accident.
We just kept repeating, like a mantra, "Everyone has accidents. It's okay. Let's get you all cleaned up."
This week has been much better. But we're still having accidents here and there. She had one today, in fact. But I think today's had to do with the fact that she was having all kinds of fun outside in the snow and didn't want to come in.
So. We're not completely there yet. But we're on our way. She'll be there really soon.

The Latest on Potty Training
So! Since our last "going for broke" potty training update, here is what has transpired.
When we decided we were going for broke, we meant it. We actually went so far as to return an unopened package of diapers that we had in the house, which meant that there were only about 10 diapers total in the house that would fit R (other than cloth diapers we could always slap on her in dire need).
That meant we were even keeping her in underpants overnight. We did this with no real preparation or lead-up. Something just kind of snapped in us and we just gung-ho WENT FOR IT.
I mean, once you think to yourself, "what is the worst that can happen?" potty training feels a lot less daunting. For us, we figured, the worst that can happen is maybe she's not ready and really cannot tell if she has to pee or not. Or she has a bunch of accidents in which case we just keep on changing her.
J bought this large waterproof pad that we put underneath R's sheet and on top of the mattress pad, and we put her to bed in underpants figuring, if she wet the bed, she wet the bed and we'd change the sheets and just keep on going.
And, as I already wrote, she DID NOT WET THE BED.
That was almost 2 weeks ago. We haven't put a diaper on her once. There were, I want to say, 3 or 4 days of accidents. One day where she had accident after accident. We just took her pants off, took her to the potty, cleaned her up, and put fresh underpants and pants on. I had to rub some aquaphor all over her thighs one evening because she was getting awfully sore from all the accidents.
The next day there were a few more accidents. But not as many. The biggest trouble was poop for a few days after that. We kept trying to catch it before she did it in her pants. The breakthrough was about a week ago when she actually started to go, said, "Oh no! Daddy! Yucky!" and J whisked her to the potty quick as can be. She had only done a small amount in her underwear and the rest she did on the potty.
Hallelujah! Since then she has not had a poop accident.
We are not completely potty trained yet, and there have been nighttime accidents--I want to say 2 or 3 nights she's wet the bed--but mostly, that hasn't been a problem. We also went on a road trip this weekend, 5 hours each way, and no accidents. Actually, no accidents all weekend.
The next step is for us to feel comfortable not reminding her to go every hour. Right now we're still telling her, "R, it's potty time!" or "In 5 minutes, we're going to go use the potty, ok?" She throws some tantrums about this still. I think she is starting to have a good sense of when she has to go and the tantrums might be related to her really not feeling like she has to go. However, most of the time that we take her to the potty, she uses it.
One thing I think is really working for us is warning her about going to the potty before we actually take her. That is, rather than just interrupting what she's doing and saying, "Okay, time to use the potty!" we tell her that after she does X, we're going to use the potty. Or we give her a time limit--even though she doesn't really know how long 5 minutes or 10 minutes is, giving her that warning and then not making her go RIGHT THEN seems to be effective.
Now we just need to work on giving her the freedom to tell us when she has to go. We've been so intent on avoiding accidents that we haven't done that yet. I'll keep you updated--but feel free to ask how she's doing in a week or so!

Potty Training Update: Cool Toys
So Potty Training is only going "okay." Some days are better than others. We're trying the "routine potty interventions throughout the day" so that she gets in the habit of using the potty before and after meals and before and after naps/baths/bedtime. Most of the time she resists our "It's potty time!" exclamations, saying, "No! It's NOT potty time!" but other times she goes along with it just fine. She does sometimes say she needs to use the potty, but this still occurs mostly as a stalling tactic to avoid having to lay down for a nap or for bed.
I was inspired to give this update because of this post on DNA's Digital Diary. R does this too when she needs to wipe after peeing. She pulls on the roll of toilet paper until one of us grabs it to prevent her from unrolling the whole thing. I'm just glad she hasn't taken it as far as walking into another room with it, ha-ha!

Potty Training
So, yeah. We're kind of trying to potty-train R. So far it's going... oooo.kaaay.
We bought her her first underpants last week, and Grandma sent some training underpants, which are excellent because they are more absorbent than her underpants.
At school, R's teachers report that she's great about using the potty and doesn't seem to have a lot of accidents. She has both pull-ups and underpants at school, and I think, wears them both (pull-ups or diapers for naptime) throughout the day.
At home, she's been awesome about using the potty in the morning (although not the last couple of mornings) as well as before/after bathtime (although not the last couple of days).
I'm not sure how strongly we're going to push the potty training right now though because everything I've read suggests that there will be regression once the baby is born (I'm less than 6 weeks away from my due date, yikes!). Mostly we're trying to take advantage of what seemed to be her own interest in potty training, and let her practice using the potty and recognizing potty cues.
All I'll say is that this weekend has been kind of a bust. I feel like we're cloth-diapering again-- with a slew of peed-in underpants and two pairs of poopy underpants in the wash right now. This isn't a huge deal at all, just labor-intensive and somewhat confusing, because sometimes she's great about saying, "I need to use the potty" and other times she, well, isn't.

19 months
Dear R,
At 19 months, you are continuing to expand your vocabulary with new words and signs daily. One of our favorite books these days is one we've checked out from the library, Maisy's Amazing Big Book of Words. You love looking at all the pictures and learning words for them. You also love that the book has flaps on a lot of the pages that you can open and look underneath.
You babble and talk all the time around people you're familiar with but get shy around strangers-- you tend to watch them for a bit before warming up to them and then chattering as always. The other day when Great-Aunt K and Rapunzel visited, you fell in love with Great-Aunt K and spent a good bit of time working on your bead maze with Great-Aunt K while J, Rapunzel, and I visited a bit in the other room.
You got a new doll from Grandma and Grandpa for Christmas, as well as two strollers--one from Grammie and Grampie and one from Grandma and Grandpa, both of which you use on a regular basis around and around our living room. You love to put your dolls in and out of the stroller and wheel them everywhere.
You've started getting very interested in the toilet and diaper changes. You ask us to give you new diapers all the time-- just about anytime you lay flat on your back you say, "diaper, diaper" and then when we say, "do you need a new diaper, R?" you look very serious as you nod your head up and down. When you're poopy, you walk up to us and say "Poop" while pointing to your butt. It's kind of nice to have you announcing it to us instead of having to figure it out with our noses.
You frequently lay your dolls on their backs on the floor and say "diaper, diaper, diaper" over and over again very insistently. I use whatever cloth may be laying around-- sometimes laundry that's being folded, other times cloth wipes or napkins-- to make a makeshift diaper for your dolls. You then take whatever "diaper" I've made on and off repeatedly.
You got a new potty and have been practicing sitting on it, even though you're not very excited about it yet. We've been focusing on telling you what it is and having you learn to sit on it and relax. You always pee before your bath, and that's when we've been trying to teach you how to pee while sitting on the potty. Thus far you've preferred to pee directly on the bathroom floor, though or right after you get in the bath.
We're looking forward to discovering more new words and having more adventures in potty training in the months ahead!
