Baby in Daddy's Arm?

We had another class at the birth center today: a mother-infant assessment class. Because you are discharged from the birth center shortly after the birth (between 4-6 hours after mom and baby are both stable), they go over a lot of information about what vital signs you need to track and things to keep an eye on, and so on and so forth.

We brought R with us because we weren't able to find a sitter to stay with her at home. At one point the instructor was talking about taking Mom's pulse. J, who was holding R at the time, asked her if she wanted to feel Daddy's pulse. They found it, and R felt it for a bit and then said, with some astonishment, "There's a baby in Daddy's arm!"

  1. I'm confused..are you discharged 4-6 after giving birth..meaning you go home? Aren't you suppose to stay at least one night? Or do they send you to another room in the hosp. after the 4-6 hours..

  3. Yes, we go home. We're not delivering at a hospital. i'm pretty excited. Everyone we've talked to who has delivered at the birth center has said it was GREAT to be home relaxing rather than in a hospital bed, plus there's the added complication w/ the hospital of you know, whether J would be able to stay with me or if he'd want to be home to take care of R. This way we're all together.

  5. Wow, Steph, the birthing center option sounds wonderful. Having to stay in the hospital room was the worst part about delivering in a hospital for me. I am excited to hear how it goes for you. I hope you have a wonderful birth experience this go around.

Oh, and such a cute story about R! I never knew how much entertainment kids could bring to life. It's great how they can keep us laughing.

  6. It reminds me of Art Linkletter's old t.v. show segment where he asked kids questions . He always got the cutest answers.
