December was already going to be a short month at day care (and we have to pay even for the weeks we're not going to be there) and this week R ended up with pinkeye in one eye so we kept her home on Monday. Then Tuesday she went back in only to have the day care call us around 10:30 to say that she had a fever. We got her on an antibiotic and kept her home Wednesday to ensure that she would get a good nap and plenty of TLC. Today she's still got a fever so we haven't taken her back yet. Hopefully she'll go tomorrow-- especially because I spent hours in the kitchen baking applesauce bread for each of her day care teachers!
But it feels like a huge gyp to have to spend $110 a week for three weeks in December that she won't even be at day care for. Sigh. We asked about not paying for the last two weeks, but this only means that they can't pay their employees, and we certainly don't wish that upon the teachers at the day care. They work hard-- it's not easy watching five 16-18 month olds at the same time-- and count on making their regular salary.
It's not like the money for day care isn't in our budget. It just feels so... ehh! you know?

Awwww...pinkeye is miserable. I hope she's feeling better.
ReplyDeleteI haven't found a day care place that doesn't operate that way. If it makes you feel any better, $110/week seems like a really good deal. Is that full time?
The price of day care is really good birth control. :-) It's so expensive...and rightly so I admit. I'm paying $980/month and that is mid-range for this area.
no, that's just half time. she goes in the mornings from 7ish until 12, but often J picks her up between 11 and 12. Full-time would be $200/week, so alternating between $800 and $1000 for full time, depending on whether it's a 4-week month or a 5-week month. So about the same as what you're paying, really.
ReplyDeleteI totally hear you. I spent $120 last week for three days (one extra so that I could put a day towards my mat leave) only to have to stay home with A that day due to 12" of snow and a raging ear infection for A. My provider did not offer to comp me a day after the holidays. I also have to pay for Xmas eve (holiday pay) which kinda sucks as I'm not working and could stand a day of working at home but daycare is not open.
ReplyDeleteMy last place didn't have holiday pay but the care was abysmal. I guess I figure it's part of the price for GOOD care.
